A Commission of Inquiry is visiting Manipur to investigate the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023. The commission met the Chief Minister and visited relief camps. The violence has claimed over 260 lives and displaced more than 60,000 people....

The team comprises of Justice (Retd.) B.S. Chauhan, Chairman of the Commission and its two members, Shri Himanshu Sekhar Das, IAS (Retd.) and Shri Aloka Prabhakar, IPS (Retd.).
The team met Chief Minister, Manipur Yumnam Khemchand Singh today morning and briefed him about their visit. During their stay, the team visited relief camps of the Internally Displaced Persons in Bishnupur, Churachandpur, Imphal West and Imphal East districts.
More than 260 people were killed, over 1,500 injured, and more than 60,000 displaced after ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities on May 3, 2023. The violence erupted after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
Manipur has been under President rule since February 13, 2025, which was revoked in February this year.
The violence which was earlier limited to Meitei and Kuki areas has engulfed Naga dominated areas. There are Naga inhabited areas in Manipur which include Ukhrul, Senapati, Tamenglong, Chandel, and parts of Kangpokpi.
