Guwahati: Manipur will use 1951 as the base year for the National Register of Citizens (NRC), state's home minister Govindas Konthoujam told the legislative assembly. He said the government will pursue the matter with the Centre in line with resolutions adopted by the assembly. Konthoujam also said 24,475 illegal immigrants had been detected in the state so far.
Responding to a question from Opposition MLA K Meghachandra Singh on NRC, he said the original physical records of the 1951 NRC were being traced. The state government alone cannot implement NRC without the Centre's approval, he said. As per a resolution adopted by the legislative assembly on August 5, 2022, the Manipur State Population Commission has already been constituted.
"The issue of NRC should not be taken lightly," Konthoujam said.
NRC has been implemented in Assam, but the register has still not been kept in the public domain, with the matter pending in court.
Replying to another question from Opposition MLA Th Lokeshwar Singh on illegal immigrants in the state, Konthoujam said 14,992 have been pushed back, adding that the process is carried out through diplomatic channels.
