GUWAHATI: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that the situation in neighbouring Manipur will have an impact on the state.

The government of Manipur has announced the extension of mobile internet suspension across nine districts for two additional days. The ban was extended till 5:15 pm on December 3.

Barak Valley shares a border with Jiribam. Sarma said, "I think the situation in Manipur will definitely have some impact on Assam. That is why we have deployed additional police forces in Barak Valley to see that nothing spills over to Assam."


In a order issued by the Home Department said the suspension was extended in Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur, Kangpokpi, Pherzawl and Jiribam.

“The state government after reviewing the prevailing law and order situation and its correlation with the general operation of internet services has decided to continue suspension of mobile internet and mobile data services including VSATs and VPN services in the territorial jurisdiction of Imphal West, Imphal East, Kakching, Bishnupur, Thoubal, Churachandpur and Kangpokpi, Pherzawl and Jiribam of Manipur till 5.15 pm of December 3, in public interest,” the order said.

Internet services have been temporarily suspended since November 16 after violence broke out in the state following the recovery of dead bodies of three women and three children in Jiri and Barak rivers in Manipur and Assam respectively.

Mobs have gone on rampage after the recovery of the bodies of six missing women and children in the violence-hit Jiribam district recently.

Around 10 armed militants were killed in heavy exchange of fire in Manipur's Jiribam district recently. Two CRPF jawans also suffered injuries. Kuki organisations claimed that those killed were village volunteers and not militants.

Kuldiep Singh security advisor recently said that till now 258 people were killed including militants since May 3 last year.

He said that in recent cases of violence and public unrest, 41 people were arrested.
