Tension is running high following beheading of a person in Jiribam district of Manipur. Soibam Saratkumar was allegedly killed and beheaded by unidentified miscreants. Sources said that Saratkumar had gone to his farmhouse located in the Jairolpokpi area of Jiribam District, which borders the Tamenglong District of Manipur. While returning from the farmhouse Saratkumar was allegedly kidnapped by miscreants.

The District Magistrate has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144. Krishna Kumar, the district magistrate of Jiribam, announced the order in response to unlawful activities by anti-social elements that could lead to widespread unrest, breaches of peace, and imminent danger to life and property.

At least 220 people have been killed, 1,500 injured and 60,000 displaced since violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zomi communities on May 3 last year.

The riots began after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
