Guwahati: Security forces in Manipur have launched search operations to identify and apprehend those involved in recent killings of civilians and incidents of arson.

Efforts are ongoing to identify those involved in the crime and witnesses are being located and questioned, the Manipur Police said in a release.

Joint teams of the state police, CRPF including its CoBRA unit, BSF, Assam Rifles and the army are conducting cordon and search operations as well as intelligence-based operations in the affected areas, the police said.

"Necessary action is also being taken up with the National Investigation Agency. Police and all security forces are taking the matter with utmost concern," the police said in the release issued Friday evening.

They also advised "the public to remain calm, exercise restraint and not take the law into their own hands", and "not to believe or circulate unverified information, rumours or provocative content on social media".

A six-day shutdown called by the Committee on Tribal Unity in Manipur's Kangpokpi district was put on hold for a week on Friday, after the state government met some of the demands of the Kuki organisation and assured them it would address the rest.

The committee called for the shutdown from Sunday after the mutilated bodies of two young men who went missing last week near Taphou Kuki village were found in a hilly area of neighbouring Senapati district.

The shutdown had severely disrupted the movement of goods trucks along National Highway 2, leaving several vehicles stranded in Senapati district.
