Manipur: Naga protest shutdown disrupts normal life in Senapati after killing of 3 civilians

Guwahati: Normal life was affected in Senapati district of Manipur on Monday due to a 12-hour shutdown called by Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) to protest the killing of three Naga civilians at Kailenjang village.

Two civilians were killed on the spot in the attack at Kailenjang, while a third succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment. One other victim remains under medical care at Senapati, NPO said.

It condemned the attack and called for a thorough, impartial and time-bound investigation to identify those responsible and bring them to justice.


The organisation alleged that the attack was carried out by armed Kuki elements, but the allegation could not be independently verified.

NPO expressed concern over what it described as conflicting statements by certain Kuki individuals and civil society organisations.

The shutdown started at 6 am and ended at 6 pm on September 28.

At least 306 people have been killed, and 49 remain missing in the ethnic violence that has gripped Manipur since May 2023, home minister Govindas Konthoujam told the state assembly on September 3.

More than 60,000 people have been displaced after ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities on May 3, 2023. The violence erupted after a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
