The Manipur government has declared a three-day state mourning from Sunday as a mark of respect to the late BJP MLA Vungzagin valte who passed away on Saturday. He was the first MLA victim of Manipur ethnic violence which broke out on May 3, 2023.

Valte, a banker turned politician, suffered multiple injuries when he was attacked by protesters in the state capital Imphal in May 2023. Valte, who belongs to the Zomi tribe, had undergone treatment in New Delhi.

Following the attack, he was using a wheelchair for movement. His family members had earlier alleged that Valte attacked Meitei radical group Arambai Tenggol (AT).

Three tribal organisations have announced a coffin rally in Churachandpur, to coincide with the funeral.

The tribal organisations resolved to submit a joint memorandum to the Central Government seeking a political resolution. The planned coffin rally is intended as a demonstration of grief and solidarity.

The leaders extended their deepest condolences to the bereaved family and appealed to the public to maintain peace and refrain from violence during the funeral and the rally.

Over 260 people were killed, more than 1,500 injured, and over 60,000 people were displaced after the ethnic violence broke out between the Meitei and the Kuki Zo people on May 3, 2023, when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised in the hill districts to protest the Meitei community’s demand for Scheduled Tribe status.
