Mob sets newly constructed gym in Manipur's Churachandpur district on fire
The Manipur government has suspended internet in Churachandpur district after a mob set newly constructed open gym at at PT Sports Complex, New Lamka, on fire on Thursday night, ahead of the north-eastern state's Chief Minister N Biren Singh's scheduled plan to inaugurate the venue.

The mob had also vandalised the venue for public meeting at Sadhbhav Mandap.

Police had dispersed the mob but not before the venue was damaged and hundreds of chairs were also burnt.

Following the incidents, the Manipur government has suspended Internet and mobile data in Churachandpur district with immediate effect and until the situation improves, according to a government order.

The government said "some unruly mobs and anti-social elements" had damaged the gym and also vandalized the venue for public meeting.

"In addition, it is learnt that a total shutdown in Churachandpur district has been called by Indigenous Tribal Leaders' Forum (ITLF) from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. of April 28 and that there is likelihood of mobilization of the public for protest through social media and networking sites, which could lead to escalation of public unrest and unlawful activities in Churachandpur district," S. Thienlaljoy Gangte, additional deputy commissioner of Churachandpur district wrote in the government order.

ITLF claimed that "the government has shown no sign of willingness or sincerity in addressing the plight of the people" despite submission of memorandums to the government protesting an eviction drive to clear reserved forest areas of farmers and other tribal settlers.

Last month, a peaceful protest turned violent in Kangpokpiat Kangpokpi town in Manipur and five people were injured in the incident.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh had said a Myanmar-based militant outfit had incited the protest.
