Manipur declares 3-day mourning for BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte

Guwahati: The Manipur government has declared a three-day state mourning from Sunday as a mark of respect to BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte who passed away on Saturday. He was the first MLA who was a victim of Manipur ethnic violence which broke out on May 3, 2023.

Chief Minister Y Khemchand Singh reached New Delhi late Saturday evening and visited the hospital in Gurugram to pay his last respects. A prayer service was also held in the presence of MLAs and leaders of the Zomi community based in Delhi.

Valte, a banker turned politician, suffered multiple injuries when he was attacked by protesters in Imphal in May 2023. Valte, who belongs to the Zomi tribe, was undergoing treatment in New Delhi.


Following the attack, he was confined to a wheelchair. His family members had earlier alleged that Valte was attacked by Meitei radical group Arambai Tenggol (AT).

Valte represented Thanlon assembly constituency in Churachandpur. On February 8, Valte was flown to Delhi from Imphal in an air ambulance after he complained of breathlessness and chest pain. The CM had made arrangements for the air ambulance.
