Manipur Assembly urges Centre to update NRC before Census

Guwahati: On the first day of 8th session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, the leader of the House and Chief Minister, Y. Khemchand Singh moved the House to pass the resolution that, “this House once again reaffirms its previous Resolutions passed on the 5th August, 2022 and 1st March, 2024 and to urge the Government of India to update National Registration of Citizens (NRC) in Manipur before conducting Census in the interest of the state in particular and the nation in general.”

Replying to the Calling Attention Motion raised by MLA K. Ranjit Singh, Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam said that the people of Manipur and the Government have the firm determination to protect the integrity of the State. He said that there is no official report on land swap deal between India and Myanmar. He added that majority of the portion of the international border fencing has been completed.

While replying to the Calling Attention Motion raised by MLA K. Meghachandra, the Home Minister stated that we all should shoulder the responsibility and practice sense of humanity to restore peace in the State. He also appealed to all the religious and community leaders to come forward to solve the trust deficit.


The Centre on Monday deferred the census operations in Manipur amid protests by civil society organisations for updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) before conducting the exercise.

The decision came after Union home minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level review meeting in New Delhi to assess the current situation in Manipur. The meeting was attended by Manipur governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, chief minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Union home secretary Govind Mohan, along with other senior officials.

Earlier on Monday, the Manipur High Court put on hold the census-related exercise, including the house-listing, until further notification from the Registrar General of India.
