With the Manipur administration in preparation mode, there is speculation that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to visit the ethnic violence-hit state on September 13 or 14.

A senior official in Manipur, who did not want to be named, told ET, "An official note of Manipur's General Administration Department stated that Chief Secretary, Government of Manipur, welcomed all the members/officers present in the preparatory meeting for the proposed VVIP visit on September 13/14." "The visit needs to be organised in a grand manner. Request the Secretary, GAD (General Administration Department) to take forward the discussion," the note said.

The note also cited Kangla in Imphal and the Peace Ground in Churachandpur as the venues of the events involving the VVIP whose name was not mentioned.

The Prime Minister will be on a two-day visit to Assam starting on September 13 during which he will take part in multiple programmes in the state. Modi is also likely to visit Aizawl in Mizoram where he is scheduled to inaugurate the 51.38kmm Bairabi-Sairang railway line.

Reacting to the likely visit of the PM to Manipur, Congress has termed the visit "too little, too late."

In a post on X, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said, "It appears that the PM may finally summon up the courage and empathy to visit Manipur briefly on September 13. But that may be a case of TLTL - too little too late.
