Man tries to sneak in $90,000 between book pages, apprehended at Mumbai airport

Mumbai customs officials on Tuesday reported that they seized American currency from a passenger who had attempted to smuggle $90,000 between book pages.

Officials at Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport intercepted the passenger in the hours between January 22 and 23

After officials received an intelligence input, they apprehended said passenger and check his luggage to find the dollar bills between the pages of the book he had on him. The currency amounted to $90,000 (approx. Rs 81 lakh)


Asked to produce documents for the huge sum of foreign currency, the passenger was unable to do so, prompting Customs agents to seize the money under Section 110 of the Customs Act.

The passenger has been placed under arrest under section 104 of the Customs Act. The accused was produced before a special court in Mumbai which remanded him to 14-day judicial custody.
