Police in Mangaluru have arrested 15 men and registered an FIR against 19 individuals after a 38-year-old man was lynched by a mob on Sunday in Kudupu for allegedly shouting “Pakistan Zindabad” during a local cricket match.

The victim, suspected to be Ashraf from Pulpally in Kerala’s Wayanad district, was reportedly beaten to death near the Bhatra Kallurti Temple around 3pm. His body was recovered the next evening, around 5.30pm, police said. Relatives of the deceased left for Mangaluru late Tuesday to confirm his identity.

“Some people got together and beat him up. The victim later died,” Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara told reporters on Tuesday. He confirmed that the man was assaulted after allegedly raising a pro-Pakistan slogan during the game.

Mangaluru police commissioner Anupam Agrawal said the incident began with an altercation between the man and an autorickshaw driver, identified as Sachin. “Sachin hit him first. He was soon joined by others who used sticks and kicked the victim multiple times,” Agrawal said.

The assault reportedly continued until the man was left seriously injured. It is unclear whether he died at the scene or succumbed to his injuries later. Police said the case was registered after verifying CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts.

“There are reports that the man had mental health issues and often stayed away from home,” a senior police officer said, citing preliminary inputs from the family. Originally from Malappuram, the family had been residing in Pulpally for several years.
