A 24-year-old man, Arshad, in conspiracy with his father, Mohammed Badar, murdered his four sisters and mother inside a hotel room in Lucknow on Wednesday. Arshad alleged land-related harassment by locals in their hometown of Agra and claimed that his sisters were being sold in Hyderabad. Following the crime, he dropped his father at Charbagh railway station and walked into a police station to report the incident, according to a TOI report.

Panic gripped the busy and densely populated Naka area on the first morning of the new year as police arrived at the small Hotel Sharanjeet, where Arshad had booked room 109. Inside, officers discovered the lifeless bodies of his mother, Aasma (45), and his four younger sisters—Aalia (9), Aaksha (16), Rehmeen (18), and Aalsiya (19).

Arshad recorded a video showing the bodies and explaining his reasons for the murders, blaming neighbors for the harassment that drove him to commit the crime.

Lucknow’s Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central, Raveena Tyagi, confirmed that Arshad and his father were the prime suspects. “Arshad has been taken into custody, and further investigations are underway. Teams are scanning CCTV footage to locate his father, who is still at large,” she said.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Arshad and his father strangled the victims, and injuries suggested the women were sedated before being killed. Their wrists had also been slit. According to hotel staff, the family was last seen outside their room around 1 a.m.

During interrogation, Arshad confessed, claiming that ongoing harassment from their neighbors left him fearing for his mother’s and sisters’ future. He said he decided to end their lives to spare them further suffering.

Police reported that Arshad had taken the family to Ajmer before bringing them to Lucknow on December 30, where they checked into the hotel. At night, Arshad made them consume alcohol, gagged some with cloth, and strangled them with a dupatta. He slit the wrists of others using a blade, with his father assisting throughout.

After the murders, Arshad dropped his father at the railway station and then reported the incident to the police. Officers recovered the murder weapons, including a blade and a dupatta. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination, and Agra police have been informed.

An FIR has been registered against Arshad under section 302 (murder) of the IPC by sub-inspector Kamal Kumar. Additional DCP Manisha Singh confirmed that evidence is being collected, and further investigation is ongoing to verify the details of the crime.
