Man arrested for destroying bird nests, killing 24 younglings in Mysuru

A man in Sindhuvalli village in Mysuru has been arrested for allegedly destroying the nests of two bird species and causing the demise of 24 fledglings. The individual, identified as Ravi, has now been placed in judicial custody following his arrest.

Forest officials in Mysuru revealed that Ravi, employed as a mason, was taken into custody on Tuesday based on multiple provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. He stands accused of toppling the nests of Cormorants and common egrets, situated on a peepal tree within his village, which is approximately 16 km away from Mysuru city.

During interrogation, Ravi confessed to forest officials that his motivation was the frustration caused by bird droppings, which were marring the area beneath the tree, his favored leisure spot. He dismantled all the bird nests on the tree with sticks, leading to the tragic demise of 24 young birds on Monday. He was later arrested.


Cormorants have not been recognized for their frequent breeding in Mysuru lately; their presence is indeed infrequent. However, due to the favorable environment characterized by abundant water bodies and a staple diet of fish, their preferred sustenance, these birds had established nests and successfully hatched eggs. Ordinarily, these aquatic birds inhabit Mysuru for approximately two months before embarking on migration.
