Making friends in Bengaluru: Why the starting line is the new social hub

It’s not you, it’s the setting.
While party venues and networking mixers often feel transactional or exhausting, thousands of locals are finding connection at 5 AM on Sunday at a half marathon.
Why does a start line work?
A race gives strangers what a party doesn’t: A reason to be there and something to talk about. Everyone is a little nervous about the same thing. “First time?” is a complete conversation opener, and nobody expects intellectual conversation at 5 a.m. People run beside each other in complete silence and they become part of something greater than individuals.
Building a community takes time, but stick with it and you'll find your people. It puts you in the same place as hundreds of people who all chose to get up early for the same reason, which is a better starting point than most Saturday night plans offer.
You don’t need to call yourself a runner. You just have to be open to trying something new.
The Times Internet Half Marathon brings the Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi editions with 3K, 5K, 10K and 21K categories. The choice allows participants to consider a distance that suits their current level and the experience they want from race day.
Arrive a little early, say hello to one person, and see the magic of this conversation. By next weekend, that random hello at the start line could turn into a text message from a new friend.
