Major thunderstorm likely in Delhi-NCR, red alert issued

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on May 25 raised a red alert for Delhi and its surrounding regions, indicating the likelihood of intense thunderstorms, rain, and high winds in the upcoming two to three hours. This alert falls under a Nowcast warning, reflecting the current meteorological conditions. The IMD has reported that a thunderstorm cell is moving towards Delhi from the west and northwest.

As a result of this weather system, residents can expect severe thunderstorm activity, including dust-raising winds and frequent lightning, with wind speeds potentially reaching between 40 and 60 km/h, or even higher. The IMD has advised the public to take appropriate safety measures during this time. They have specifically recommended that individuals refrain from staying in open areas and avoid seeking shelter under trees.

The IMD has also cautioned against proximity to weak walls or unstable structures, as well as staying away from bodies of water. The anticipated thunderstorm may lead to the uprooting of trees and breaking of branches. Additionally, crops such as bananas and papayas could experience moderate damage, and loose dry branches may be dislodged by the strong winds. Dust storms may also develop in certain areas of the city.


Authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and take all necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Just a few days earlier, on Wednesday, a mass of clouds moved into North Delhi and progressed towards the south-southeast, resulting in a dust storm accompanied by robust winds. During that event, wind speeds reached between 50 and 60 km/h, with gusts hitting up to 70 km/h, alongside light rainfall in the evening.

In addition to the storms affecting Delhi, heavy rain and thunderstorms impacted various regions in Haryana, specifically in Karnal. Following the dust storm and subsequent thunderstorms on Wednesday, numerous areas in the capital experienced power outages. Areas such as Bawana, Narela, Jahangirpuri, Civil Lines, Shakti Nagar, Model Town, Wazirabad, Dhirpur, and Burari reported disruptions in electricity supply.

According to a statement from Tata Power DDL, the electricity supply was temporarily halted in certain locations to safeguard the public and prevent electrocution risks. This precaution was necessary due to fallen trees and branches that had landed on power lines, causing damage.
