NEW DELHI: A significant fire broke out on Saturday evening in an abandoned building near the Manipur secretariat complex, close to Chief Minister N Biren Singh's official residence, according to police reports.

Three fire tenders were deployed and managed to extinguish the blaze within an hour, officials stated. No damage was reported to the Chief Minister's bungalow, though security measures were heightened following the incident.

The cause of the fire is yet to be determined. The property belonged to the family of the late IAS officer T Kipgen, a former Chief Secretary of Goa, and has been vacant since violence erupted in Manipur last year.

This incident comes within a week of fresh violence in Manipur's Jiribam district.

Police sources have not ruled out the possibility of arson. Further details are awaited.
