Maharashtra is likely to see some restrictions imposed after the 10-day Ganesh Utsav, which begins on September 10, if there is a rise in Covid cases. A wary government is already concerned about the huge crowds which are likely to throng public spaces and markets before the festival.

The state cabinet put off its decision for now, preferring to take a wait and watch approach. However, deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar warned that the state would not hesitate to take tough steps even during the festival.“We have seen a lot of people turning Covid positive this week. Many are not wearing marks and organising parties at home. We (government) are trying to be liberal (with the restrictions). However, if cases continue to rise, then we will have to take strong action,” Pawar told reporters in Pune.
