Maharashtra bandh today to protest Lakhimpur Kheri killings. Here are all the details

Maharashtra will see a statewide bandh today called by the three-party MVA alliance comprising the NCP, Congress and Shiv Sena. The alliance is protesting the killing of four farmers in Uttar Pradesh's Lakhimpur Kheri.

Everything, except for essential services, will be closed in the state. The Agricultural Produce Market Committee or subzi mandi will also be shut. Restaurants and shops have decided to “voluntarily” keep shut till 4pm. Transporters said they would support the bandh, which might temporarily hit supplies.

The Mumbai Police have made a plan to ensure people are not inconvenienced due to the bandh. Policemen have be deployed at strategic points. Three companies of the Central Reserve Police Force, 500 Home Guards and 700 from other forces will help the Mumbai Police in maintain law and order.


The impact of the bandh is likely to be highest in Shiv-Sena dominated areas of central Mumbai and Thane. BEST buses may be off the roads too. About 27 lakh commuters are expected to be affected.

The BJP has opposed the bandh call. BJP MLA Nitesh Rane has warned the state government not to shut shops forcefully. In a cabinet meeting on October 6, the Maharashtra state cabinet minister passed a resolution to express its condolences over the unfortunate death of farmers in the Lakhimpur Kheri incident. Cabinet ministers also observed two minutes of silence and paid tributes to the deceased farmers.

Water Resources Minister Jayant Patil had tabled the resolution which was being seconded by Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat and Industry Minister and Senior Shiv Sena leaders Subhash Desai.
