Maharashtra Medical Crisis: 24, including 12 infants, die at Nanded government hospital in 24 hours

In the last 24 hours, a tragic incident unfolded at a government hospital in Maharashtra's Nanded, where at least 24 individuals, including 12 infants, lost their lives. This unfortunate event is reportedly linked to a shortage of essential medicines at the Shankarao Chavan Government Medical College and Hospital.

According to Dr. Shyamrao Wakode, the acting dean of the Medical College, the deceased patients were afflicted with a range of ailments, such as snake bites, arsenic poisoning, phosphorus poisoning, and various other conditions.

"Around 12 children died in the last 24 hours. 12 adults also died due to various ailments (snake bites, arsenic and phosphorus poisoning etc.). Due to transfers of various staff, there was some difficulty for us. We were supposed to buy medicines from the Haffkine Institute but that also didn't happen. Also, patients come from far off to this hospital and there were many patients whose sanctioned budget also got disturbed," Dr. Wakode said.


Ashok Chavan, a senior Congress leader and former Chief Minister from Nanded, has stated that in addition to the fatalities mentioned earlier, there are reports of approximately 70 patients who have been referred from private hospitals within the district and are currently in 'critical' condition.

"Around 24 people's death has been reported at the Dr Shankarrao Chavan Medical College and Hospital and therefore I have come here and met the Dean. The situation is concerning and serious. The government should take this up and provide immediate help. Around 70 other people are critical. Replacement of a lot of nurses who were transferred has not been given," Chavan revealed.

The Congress leader also emphasised that the situation is a cause for concern and stressed the importance of providing all necessary assistance and resources to address the crisis.
