Preparations are underway to enhance the city's landscape for the 45-day event, with plans for vibrant art installations, murals, and decorative displays adorning city walls.
Held once every 12 years, the Maha Kumbh Mela draws millions of devotees to the sacred Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati rivers converge. Pilgrims come to bathe in the holy waters, seeking spiritual purification and the ultimate goal of moksha or liberation.
Scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 26, 2025, the event will not only be a religious gathering but also a celebration of India’s rich cultural heritage. The festival will feature a series of cultural performances, themed exhibitions, and interactive experiences across Prayagraj, telling the story of the Kumbh’s profound traditions.
One of the key highlights will be a collaboration between the Archaeological Survey of India, the Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts, and various museums and archives, which will curate a predominantly digital exhibition showcasing Kumbh traditions from around the country. The exhibit will include rare manuscripts and photographs, offering a deeper insight into the history of the mela.
The National School of Drama is also on board to present performances such as Samudramanthan and other plays inspired by the Kumbh Mela. Cultural performances will be held across the city, with prominent artists from various states participating in the festivities. The Uttar Pradesh government has planned a major addition to the event in the form of a grand Ganga Pandal, which will seat 10,000 people, and three additional stages, each accommodating 4,000 spectators, at key locations.
In addition to these performances, 20 more stages will be dedicated to folk, classical, and celebrity artists. The Sahitya Kala Academy, along with other cultural organizations, will organize book exhibitions, seminars, and discussions, showcasing the literary heritage tied to the Kumbh. The Union and state governments also plan to screen cultural documentaries to further engage visitors in the vibrant history of the mela.
The Maha Kumbh 2025 promises to be a unique fusion of religion, culture, and art, offering a platform for India to showcase its cultural legacy on the global stage.
