New Delhi, March 2 (IANS) Parts of the national capital on Saturday morning received light rain following a western disturbance, the India Meteorological (IMD) Department said.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecasted light to moderate rainfall or snowfall in several parts of Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand today. The weather department has also predicted similar weather conditions in Delhi, Punjab, and West Uttar Pradesh, among other regions.

Snowfall Prediction

IMD has predicted light to moderate rain/snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, at some places on March 3rd, and at isolated places on March 4th. Yesterday, snowfall in the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh disrupted daily life in tribal districts like Lahaul, Spiti, and Kinnaur, making about 441 roads, including five national highways, inaccessible. The local MeT office has forecasted a wet spell till March 7th due to a fresh Western Disturbance affecting the western Himalayan region from the night of March 5th.


Rain Prediction

In Uttarakhand, light to moderate rain and snowfall has been predicted at many places accompanied by isolated thunderstorms and lightning on March 3rd.

Rain also lashed several parts of the national capital in the early hours today. Areas such as Mandi House, RK Puram, Indraprastha, Kartavya Path, and Central Delhi witnessed fresh showers. According to RWFC Delhi, thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain and gusty winds with speeds of 30-50 km/h are expected over and adjoining areas of isolated places in South Delhi, South-East Delhi, East Delhi, NCR, Hastinapur, Daurala, Meerut, Modinagar, Pilakhua (U.P.) during the next 2 hours.

In Uttarakhand, IMD has forecasted light to moderate rain and thunderstorms likely to occur at most places in districts like Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar, and Pithoragarh, and at many places in Tehri, Dehradun, Pauri, and Haridwar districts. Very light to light rain/thunderstorms are expected in the remaining districts, with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning likely to occur at isolated places in Tehri, Pauri, Dehradun, Almora, Champawat, Haridwar, Nainital, and Udham Singh Nagar districts.

IMD has also predicted light to moderate rainfall at isolated places on March 3rd over Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh.

Weather Outlook

IMD has also forecasted light to moderate rain at some places accompanied by isolated thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (speed reaching 30-40 kmph) over East Uttar Pradesh, West Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh.

The weather department has indicated that the country is likely to experience a warmer summer and more heatwave days this year, with El Nino conditions predicted to continue until at least May. Above-normal rainfall is expected in March, with more than 117 per cent of the long-period average of 29.9 mm. During a press conference, IMD director Mrutyunjay Mohapatra also mentioned that the country is likely to see above-normal maximum and minimum temperatures.
