Law students arrested for hurling abuses in Supreme Court sent to 14-day jail

New Delhi: A Delhi court on Wednesday sent to 14-day judicial custody the two law students arrested for allegedly hurling abuses during a Supreme Court hearing and assaulting a security staff.

The law students were produced before judicial magistrate Ravi, on completion of their police custody.

The court allowed Delhi Police's plea seeking 14 days' judicial custody of Prabal Pratap and Chander Bhan, aged 24 and 23. The magistrate directed that the accused be produced before the court on July 29.


Pratap, a third-year law student of Lucknow University from Uttar Pradesh's Etawah, who was appearing as the petitioner-in-person, and Bhan, a second-year law student from Raebareli district, were arrested in connection with the incident that took place on July 10.

The alleged incident occurred at the top court during the hearing of the Special Leave Petition (Civil), Prabal Pratap and Another vs State of Uttar Pradesh.

According to the police, Pratap, appearing as a petitioner-in-person, allegedly disrupted the court proceedings by using abusive and unparliamentary language, throwing papers inside the courtroom and creating a commotion.

When a security personnel intervened to restrain him, he allegedly used criminal force and obstructed him from performing his official duties.

An FIR in connection with the matter was registered at Tilak Marg Police Station

At the apex court's direction, both were taken to the Institute of Human Behaviour and Allied Sciences (IHBAS) for medical examination, where doctors found that neither required any immediate active psychiatric intervention.
