MHA Approves Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang as Ladakh's new districts
The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has announced the creation of five new districts in the union territory Ladakh, Union Minister Amit Shah said on Monday.

The newly established districts are Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, following which the government expects improvement in the delivery of public services and bring government initiatives closer to the residents of these remote areas.

At present Ladakh has two districts, Leh and Kargil. With the latest development, the Union Territory will have seven districts in total.

"In pursuit of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji's vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny. The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh," Shah posted on X.

The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019 had divided the state into separate Union territories of Jammu and Kashmir with Assembly and Ladakh without legislature.

Following this, Centre laws were made applicable in these two union territories with law and order power with the union government.

The move also comes just after assembly elections announced for Jammu and Kashmir, scheduled for September, first time after scrapping the northern-most state's special status in 2019.

PM Modi congratulates people of Ladakh

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the creation of five new districts in Ladakh is a move aimed at enhancing governance and fostering prosperity in the region.

In his statement, Prime Minister Modi emphasized the significance of this decision, saying, "The creation of five new districts in Ladakh is a step towards better governance and prosperity. Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will now receive more focused attention, bringing services and opportunities even closer to the people. Congratulations to the people there."
