The
Maharashtra government has ordered an investigation into the call records and financial transactions of comedian
Kunal Kamra after he took a swipe at Deputy Chief Minister
Eknath Shinde during a stand-up show in Mumbai.
Yogesh Kadam, Maharashtra’s Minister of State for Home, announced the probe in the state assembly on Monday. “Call recordings along with CDRs, as well as bank statements of comedian Kunal Kamra, will also be checked. We will find out who is behind this,” he said, as reported by ANI.
The move follows political uproar over Kamra’s parody of a Bollywood song in which he appeared to mock Shinde’s 2022 rebellion against
Uddhav Thackeray. The show, recorded at Mumbai’s Habitat Comedy Club, has now become a political flashpoint.

The Joke That Sparked Outrage
During his performance, Kamra wove Maharashtra’s turbulent political history into his act, taking aim at the fractured state of
Shiv Sena and the
Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
“Shiv Sena first came out of the BJP, then Shiv Sena came out of Shiv Sena. NCP came out of NCP. They gave nine buttons to one voter... everyone got confused,” Kamra quipped, setting up the punchline. He then broke into song, modifying a tune from Dil To Pagal Hai, appearing to lampoon Shinde’s political moves.
His lyrics, though indirect, left little doubt about the target: “Meri nazar se tum dekho, to gaddar nazar wo aaye” (If you see through my eyes, you will see a traitor).”
Shiv Sena’s Fury and Political Accusations
Kamra’s act provoked a swift and aggressive response from Shiv Sena members loyal to Shinde. On Sunday, party workers vandalised the Unicontinental Hotel in Mumbai’s Khar area, where the show was recorded. The police arrested 11 Shiv Sena Yuva Sena members for the attack.
Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam accused Kamra of being part of a political conspiracy, alleging that Uddhav Thackeray’s faction funded the show. “In the name of
stand-up comedy, he has made a very low-level comment on our supreme leader, Eknath Shinde. The place where this show was recorded and the booking money for it came from Matoshree, from Uddhav Thackeray, and that is why Eknath Shinde Sahab has been targeted,” Nirupam claimed.
Rahool Kanal, a general secretary of Shiv Sena’s youth wing, echoed the sentiment. “This is about self-respect. The message for Kunal Kamra is clear—this is just the trailer, the full picture is yet to come,” he warned, hinting at more repercussions.
Political Reactions: Free Speech vs. Insult?
The controversy has further widened the political divide in Maharashtra. While ruling Mahayuti alliance members—BJP and Shiv Sena—condemned Kamra’s remarks, the opposition
Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) defended his right to free speech.
Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis struck a firm stance. “We respect freedom of expression, but recklessness will not be tolerated. Kamra should apologise for his low-level comedy,” he said, adding that “in 2024, people will decide who the real Sena leader is.”

Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray, however, dismissed the outrage. “Calling a traitor a ‘gaddar’ is not an attack. I don’t think Kunal Kamra said anything wrong. Hear the full song and make others hear it too,” he said.
NCP-SCP MLA Rohit Pawar took a broader view, lamenting the erosion of free speech. “This is not the pre-2014 era for comedians to enjoy freedom of expression,” he said, urging political leaders to educate their supporters on democratic values.
A Deeper Political Battle: Shinde vs Thackeray
At the heart of this controversy is Maharashtra’s ongoing political struggle between Eknath Shinde and Uddhav Thackeray. In June 2022, Shinde led a rebellion against Thackeray, pulling a significant chunk of MLAs away and eventually toppling the Maha Vikas Aghadi government. He later aligned with the BJP and was declared the official leader of Shiv Sena by the Election Commission of India, a ruling that dealt a major blow to Thackeray’s faction.
Since then, tensions between the two factions have remained high, with both sides fiercely contesting for political and ideological supremacy. The battle over Shiv Sena’s identity has spilled into legal fights over party symbols, political rallies, and, now, even comedy performances.
The response to Kamra’s act raises deeper concerns about the boundaries of
political satire in India. While humour and satire have long been a part of the democratic discourse, the backlash against comedians and artists has intensified in recent years.
For Kamra, this is not the first brush with controversy. He has faced multiple bans from airlines and legal notices for his outspoken political jokes. Yet, his case now reflects a broader reality—where political humour is increasingly being policed, and comedians find themselves caught in Maharashtra’s political crossfire.
As the investigation into Kamra’s call records and financial transactions unfolds, it raises a fundamental question: in today’s India, is satire still allowed, or has it become a punishable offence?
