Kolkata Police said, “A lot of misinformation is being circulated from certain quarters regarding action taken by police over an incident of violation of traffic rules. It's apparently clear from the CCTV footage that the truck in question was being driven in a dangerous manner violating the traffic lane. The other vehicle narrowly escaped a collision thanks to the alertness of its driver.”
“Its a case of violation of traffic rules & legal action is being initiated as per law against the driver of the offending vehicle. The public is advised not to be misled by unverified claims & to rely on the authentic updates from official sources,” Kolkata Police said. The Kolkata Police has also released footage of the incident.
The Kolkata police had stopped an Indian Army truck after the incident, which happened near the Writers’ Buildings during an alleged wrongful turn on Tuesday morning. The incident comes close on the heels after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee accused the BJP of using the army to dismantle a stage set up by the Trinamool for a protest harassment of Bengalis across the country.
The Hare Street police station cops said the army truck was driving ‘recklessly’ and had violated a signal and ignored a ‘no-right turn’ notice in front of Writer’s Building, after which it was stopped by on-duty traffic policemen. The Kolkata Traffic Police on Tuesday seized an Indian Army truck in central Kolkata for "dangerous driving while moving close" to Kolkata Police Commissioner Manoj Verma's vehicles.
The incident took place in front of Writers' Buildings (former state secretariat) in BBD Square and near Lalbazar (Kolkata Police headquarters).
