Thousands of doctors, medical students and representatives from the nursing fraternity from all over the state on Tuesday marched towards the Swastha Bhavan, the West Bengal health department headquarters at Salt Lake on the northern outskirts of Kolkata, in support of their demands on the R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital rape-murder case.
West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday invited the protesting junior doctors for a meeting at state secretariat to resolve impasse over RG Kar issue, following the rape and murder of a doctor last month, PTI reported citing an official.

The rape and murder of a woman doctor at RG Kar Hospital in West Bengal has led to significant public outcry. This incident has created a political crisis for the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and posed a significant challenge to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's leadership, who assumed office in 2011.

This comes after junior doctors defied the Supreme Court’s order to resume duties by 5 PM on Tuesday, vowing to continue their strike until their demands for justice in the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case are met.

The court had directed no punitive action against the doctors upon resuming work, following assurances from the West Bengal government. The doctors demand the removal of key officials and remain open to discussions.

Citizens from various backgrounds have united, demanding justice and accountability. This grassroots movement is one of the strongest civil protests since Banerjee took office, signaling widespread dissatisfaction with governance and safety issues.

The body of a young doctor, discovered on August 9, was reportedly the victim of rape and murder while on duty. Kolkata Police arrested a civic volunteer the following day.

The incident sparked widespread outrage, with thousands of medical professionals, students, activists, and citizens taking to the streets in Kolkata and other cities, expressing their grief and anger through powerful protests.
