The Supreme Court has also taken suo motu cognizance of the case and is set to hear it on August 20. A bench led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, will handle the proceedings.
The heinous crime has sparked nationwide outrage and elicited strong reactions from numerous sectors. Earlier on Sunday, football fans protested near Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata, leading to the cancellation of a Durand Cup match between Mohun Bagan and East Bengal. Junior doctors and students continue to demonstrate at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in response to the incident.
The tragic event occurred on August 9 when a postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College. This sparked massive strikes and protests within the medical community. Just a few days later, on August 14, a mob vandalized the protest site and the hospital campus at RG Kar, prompting police intervention.
To maintain law and order, the Kolkata police imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, around the Medical College and Hospital from August 18 to 24.
"The rape and murder of the trainee doctor have drawn responses from various sectors and led to significant public outcry," said a source.
The ongoing investigation and judicial proceedings aim to address the grievous crime and provide justice to the victim, amidst heightened public and community reactions.
