Speaking at the Times Now Summit on Thursday, Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the time has come to build consensus on striking the right balance between freedom of speech, innovation, and appropriate regulation.
His remarks come amid ongoing consultations by the Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) with social media platforms and stakeholders to explore restrictions on underage users. Officials said the discussions are focused on assessing the technical capability of platforms to limit access based on age.
"It is a major concern for parents globally. A recent US judgement has highlighted how addictive algorithms can harm children's growth and mental development," Vaishnaw said.
On the West Asia crisis, the minister said India handled LPG demand better than many advanced economies, with consumption now returning to pre-Iran war levels. Daily demand, which stood at 55 lakh cylinders before the conflict, had surged to 89 lakh at its peak.
He attributed the stabilisation to measures such as a 40% increase in domestic LPG production and efforts to secure shipments through the Strait of Hormuz.
Highlighting long-term energy resilience, Vaishnaw said India has diversified sourcing across regions including Russia, the US, Canada, South America, and Africa.
