'Keeping students’ future in mind': JP Nadda says FIRs against protesters to be withdrawn

Union minister JP Nadda on Tuesday said the Centre is fulfilling its assurance to withdraw cases registered against students who participated in protests, while welcoming the decision to call off a march scheduled for September 5.

Nadda said the government had assured protesting students that cases against them would be withdrawn and that no harsh action would be taken against them in the future, keeping their careers and future in mind.

“Keeping the students’ future in mind, we assured on behalf of the Government of India that the cases registered against the protesting students would be withdrawn and that no harsh action would be taken against them in the future,” Nadda said.


He said the Centre subsequently consulted governments in states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party to implement the assurance.

“In line with this, we also consulted with the governments in states ruled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, and we are now fulfilling that assurance,” he said.

Nadda welcomes decision to call off September 5 protest

The Union minister also welcomed the announcement by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) spokesperson that the protest planned for September 5 would be called off.

“We welcome the decision announced by the CJP spokesperson at a press conference to call off the protest scheduled for September 5,” Nadda said.

He said the government's focus remained on the welfare and development of young people.

“The progress and development of the youth remain the government’s top priority,” Nadda said.

CJP co-convener Sourav Das, during a hearing in the Supreme Court earlier on Tuesday, said the organisation had decided to withdraw its call for the September 5 march following the government's assurances and the court's order.

"I want to state that in view of the positive assurances of the government of India and the judicial sanctity bestowed upon them today, and in view of the order being passed by this court, the CJP deems it appropriate to withdraw the call for the march on September 5 and looks forward to compliance with today's order," Das said.
