Karnataka to release AI guidelines for medical education

Bengaluru: Karnataka will soon release guidelines governing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medical education, additional chief secretary of medical education department Mohammed Mohsin said in a statement.

Addressing a workshop on Friday at the "Campus to Career, Future Ready University of Colleges" summit organised by the department of higher education, Mohsin said a protocol and Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for AI use was also under consideration.

"This would be of great benefit to the youth," he said in the statement. The ethical use of AI will be a key focus area, he said.

A KPMG-FICCI report released last year found that interest in AI across Indian healthcare is high. However, adoption is still at an early stage.

An Innovation Centre is proposed at the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences campus at Bhimanakuppe on Mysuru. The department is also evaluating the integration of AI across all affiliated colleges, Mohsin said.

On mental health, he said complaints have risen sharply in recent times. To address this, NIMHANS-model hospitals are being set up in Mysuru and Kalaburagi. The one in Mysuru will come up at Mysore Medical College and Research Institute.

JSS Institution vice chancellor Basavanagoudappa and Dayananda Sagar University dean Pushpa Sarkar were among those present.
