Ramakrishna, the principal of Government Pre-University College in Kundapur, Udupi, told TOI that the award had not been canceled. The (education) department stated that it may be 'delayed' owing to technological issues, but did not specify the actual cause."
On Teacher's Day, the department announced the state-level best award to two principals: Ramakrishna of Kundapur and A Rame Gowda, principal of Hunsur PU College in Mysuru district. A senior PU department official in Udupi claimed they were unaware of any dispute surrounding the award.
The Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has strongly opposed the selection of the Kundapur principal, tying him to the hijab controversy. Following the row, Ramakrishna claimed to have received hate texts from unidentified phone numbers.
The hijab controversy began in December 2021 in a government PU college in Udupi and expanded throughout the state. In February 2022, the debate heated up. At Kundapur PU College, at least 28 students were banned from entering lectures because they wore hijab.
