Karnataka: BBMP will be Greater Bengaluru from May 15, no new areas to be added for now
Greater Bengaluru will be implemented on May 15, replacing the BBMP with new corporations under the Greater Bengaluru Governance Act, 2024. The existing BBMP area of 786 sq kms will remain unchanged, with no new areas added due to surrounding gram...

The State Cabinet decided to give effect to the law on May 15 without tinkering with the BBMP’s existing area of operation spread over 786 sq kms. No new areas would be added for the time being as the city is surrounded by elected gram panchayats.
The government may carve out three corporations from the present BBMP for the ease of administration. A clarity on how the new civic bodies will be is expected to emerge over the coming days.
Both houses of the legislature passed the Bill in March last month. The new governance structure promises to improve the quality of life of citizens by instituting a decentralised administrative framework.
The law provides for the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) to supervise and coordinate the greater Bengaluru area.
The proposed law powers ward committees to become basic units of urban governance and facilitate community participation.
Industries will heave a sigh of relief as they had feared that the law would subsume the independent townships such as Electronic City Industrial Township Authority (Elcita) and Bidadi Industrial Area Township Authority into Greater Bengaluru.
Meanwhile, The Cabinet decided to defer discussions on the caste census report to its next meeting.
