Karnataka: 18 BJP MLAs suspended for six months after protests on ‘honey-trapping’ allegations
The Karnataka Assembly on Friday passed a Bill suspending 18 BJP MLAs for six months for disrupting proceedings of the House.

The Bill was tabled by Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister HK Patil.

This comes amidst a honey trap controversy, the revelation of which caused a ruckus in the state assembly on Wednesday.

The controversy broke out after KN Rajanna, the Cooperation Minister, alleged that he had been targeted in a honey trap scheme during an assembly session.

BJP says Congress running a 'honey trap factory' in Karnataka

Rajanna’s revelation came after former BJP Minister V Sunil Kumar accused the Congress government of running what he described as a “honey trap factory,” as reported by TOI.

Additionally, BJP legislator Basanagouda Patil Yatnal alleged that a senior Congress politician was implicated in the scandal.

Rajanna’s statements sparked chaos in the assembly, leading to BJP lawmakers storming into the well of the House, demanding a judicial inquiry into the issue.

Rajanna further claimed that he was not the only one targeted, suggesting that many other politicians had fallen victim to similar traps. According to him, the scandal involved 48 politicians from various parties, including Congress, BJP, and JDS.

“I am not alone; 48 others, including legislators, central leaders, and judges have been honey-trapped, and their obscene videos have been made,” Rajanna stated, according to TOI.

He insisted on a comprehensive investigation, and Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara assured the assembly that a high-level probe would be launched into the matter.

CM Siddaramaiah's response

Following the uproar, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that no one involved in the honey trap scandal would be protected.

The Congress leader guaranteed that a fair and transparent investigation would be conducted and that anyone found guilty would be dealt with in accordance with the law.

However, Siddaramaiah’s remarks did little to appease the opposition, which continued to press for a judicial inquiry.

BJP’s Leader of Opposition, R Ashoka, strongly condemned the scandal, labeling it as a deliberate conspiracy aimed at tarnishing the reputations of legislators and obstructing the work of elected officials.

Meanwhile, Home Minister G Parameshwara and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar stated that the investigation would commence once Rajanna formally submits a complaint.
