Kangpokpi killings: 5 dead in Manipur attack, CM orders crackdown on illegal arms

Guwahati: Violence in Manipur is increasing the Naga People’s Organisation (NPO) has called for the immediate closure of all shops and business establishments at Senapati District Headquarters in protest against the killing of five Naga people and injuring another.

These people were killed in an armed attack in Kangpokpi district on Thursday.

A senior police officer said that there was an attack along along the IT Road left five people dead and another injured.


The deceased have been identified as Tadsongbou Ringkangmai, T. Khullen, Mariakdibou Wijunamai, Japou MK and Anil Wijunamai.

The officer said that Wisobou Charenamai, chairman of the Chawangkining Village Authority, who was initially reported missing, was later declared dead. Another civilian, Gaikamang Ringkangmai, is injured in the attack.

The officer said the incident occurred at around 8.30 am between Makui Ashang and Thanamba Naga, along a stretch of the IT Road that serves as a vital link for Naga communities in the area. Armed assailants fired on the civilians. Identities of the attackers could not be established yet.

A high-level meeting was held at the district headquarters to review the prevailing security situation and discuss measures to promote peace and stability on Wednesday.

Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho held discussions with a delegation of the United Naga Council (UNC) led by its president, Ng. Lorho. Thanga Assembly constituency MLA Tongbram Robindro, along with senior officials and personnel from the CRPF, Assam Rifles and Senapati Police, also attended the meeting.

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh chaired a high-level security meeting at the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, Imphal.

The meeting was held following the 15-day ultimatum given by the Chief Minister on August 12 last asking individuals possessing any type of illegal weapons to surrender them.

The meeting discussed in detail today’s unfortunate incident along the IT Road in Kangpokpi district, in which four innocent civilians were gunned down mercilessly. The Government condemned the incident in the strongest terms. The Chief Minister instructed the security officials to nab and initiate action against the perpetrators of the crime.

Further, the meeting decided to take stringent action against any individual, irrespective of community, found in possession of illegal arms and weapons.

Additionally, the meeting also decided that cadres of outfits under the SoO or peace talks with the Government carrying weapons beyond their designated camps would be dealt seriously and face action.
