Kaliaganj case: Calcutta High Court forms SIT to probe minor girl's murder

Justice Rajasekhar Mantha has expressed discontent over the probe by state police. The court said that the police was under pressure and unable to perform. It was observed that the family was reportedly not present.

Calcutta High Court on Thursday formed a three member Special Investigation Team (SIT), including former CBI additional director Upen Biiswas to probe alleged murder of a minor girl in Malda's Kaliaganj. Major violence had erupted over the girl's death, leading to incidents of violence where Kaliaganj police station was attacked.

The court said that the SIT will submit its primary report on June 28, on the date of next hearing.

The three-member SIT comprises former CBI additional director Upen Biiswas, IPS Damayanti Sen and former Inspector General of Police (Bengal) Pankaj Datta.

The court also directed that the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights' will coordinate with the SIT.

Uttar Dinajpur’s Kaliaganj turned into a warzone following the death of a minor girl whose body was recovered from a pond. The family claimed that she was allegedly raped and murdered and they had demanded a CBI probe into the incident.

Agitation broke in the area and continued for several days. On April 25, agitators set ablaze a part of Kaliaganj Police Station, a vehicle and vandalized the premises, protesting against the death of a minor. Some police personnel were reportedly injured during the hour-long ruckus. Ruckus had continued for several hours with the agitators pelting stones at police personnel.
