This event is part of a pilot project initiated by the central government and the Uttarakhand Tourism Development Board. The traditional Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which began in 1981 from Lipu Lekh Pass, was halted by China in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic and has not resumed since.
Pilgrims can now view Mount Kailash from old Lipu Lekh, located at an altitude of 18,500 feet in the Byas Valley of the Dharchula area in Pithoragarh. Vijay Nath Shukla, KMVN's general manager (tourism), stated, “This year, only 60 persons will be allowed to participate in the tour, divided into four groups of 15. Participants must be under 55 years and will undergo a medical examination before proceeding to the high Himalayas. The cost for each person is Rs 70,000.”
Participants must reach Pithoragarh on their own. On the first day, they will be transported by helicopter from Pithoragarh to Gunji. The second-day itinerary includes a visit to Adi Kailash. On the third day, visitors will travel to Nabi Dang to view Om Parvat and then proceed to old Lipu Lekh with assistance from the Army and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). The Kailash Darshan will start before noon on September 28.
Accommodation will be provided in homestays at Gunji and local villages.
