As the political fervour intensifies in Madhya Pradesh, it's not just the candidates and campaigns that are heating up; it's also the demand for Kadaknath chicken. According to a report by the Times of India (ToI), the demand for Kadaknath chicken has skyrocketed amid an influx of outsiders visiting the region during the polls.

Known as the 'black chicken,' Kadaknath has become a culinary sensation in the tribal-dominated districts of Jhabua and Alirajpur during election seasons. Jhabua got the GI tag for Kadaknath in 2018, firmly establishing itself as the epicentre of the Kadaknath trade.

Local farmers have been quick to respond by ramping up production of this delicacy. As per the report, during elections, people are willing to pay up to three times the usual price for a taste of Kadaknath.

Senior scientist and head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Dr. Jagdeesh Morya, revealed that the normally priced Kadaknath chicken, at around Rs 800 per piece, can now command prices ranging from Rs 1,200 to Rs 1,500.

Known as 'Kalamasi' in the local dialect due to its black meat, blood, and bones, Kadaknath has won the hearts of sportspersons for its exceptionally low fat content and high nutritional value. Food enthusiasts also relish its unique flavour, even though it comes at a premium price.

According to Dr. AS Diwakar, who oversees the government's Kadaknath farm, the breed can thrive in harsh climatic conditions without the need for antibiotics, making it a safe choice for human consumption. Kadaknath is also said to be used to treat various ailments and is considered an aphrodisiac.

According to Dr. Diwakar, Kadaknath boasts a protein content of 25–27%, significantly higher than that of ordinary poultry. "Additionally, it has exceptionally low fat content and a mere 0.1% cholesterol level when compared to white chickens. It's a rich source of vitamins, calcium, and phosphorus," he told ToI.

Vinod Meda, the owner of a Kadaknath farm in Thandla, pointed out that demand surges when visitors from outside the district arrive in Jhabua during election season. He added, "The demand for Kadaknath usually begins after the Shravan month. Since it's an election year, we've already started receiving numerous advance orders. People also prefer consuming this meat during the winter, as it is believed to have a warming effect on the body."
