JP Nadda visits Assam flood-hit village, assures full central support

Guwahati: Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda, on Wednesday visited Nepali Khuti village in Sivasagar district, assuring affected families of all possible support from the Centre.

Nadda, who is on a three-day visit to Northeast India, travelled through mud-covered roads in a tractor to reach the flood affected village.

Talking to media persons, he said, "There has been severe loss of property and livestock, and we stand with the people in this difficult time. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sent me to take stock of the situation. I have spoken with Chief Minister Sarma, and we will hold a detailed discussion."


He added Assam government's relief efforts have been commendable and very prompt. “The Chief Minister has carried out relief work proactively and swiftly in the flood-hit areas. Relief operations are continuing at full speed. I want to assure the people that the Government of India will extend all necessary support, whether in terms of financial assistance, compensation or rehabilitation.”

Nadda added that the Central team is assessing the flood damages.Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said Nadda visited the affected areas and witnessed the ground situation.

“The Prime Minister has sent him to assess the situation, and I am confident he will brief the Prime Minister, enabling us to provide further assistance to the affected families," Sarma said.

On August 6, he is scheduled to leave for Yazali in Arunachal Pradesh's Keyi Panyor district.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), the death toll has risen to 89, while more than 1.22 lakh people remain affected across five districts.

Former leader of opposition and Congress leader Debabrata Saikia stated while sharing a video from flood affected area stated in X, “ The devastating consequences of illegal stone and coal mining along the Nagaland border are being paid by the innocent people of Upper Assam. In this heart-wrenching video, local residents point out the massive destruction caused by unchecked mining mafias across the dikhow river. What once used to be a lush tea garden is now completely washed away by severe riverbank erosion. Despite this daylight destruction happening right under the nose of the administration, absolute silence is maintained. Worse, when the helpless locals try to raise their voices against these mafias, they are met with threats instead of solutions. This blatant government apathy is turning our natural rivers into a source of artificial, catastrophic floods and land loss for our people. We strongly demand the administration to wake up from its slumber, stop this illegal mining immediately, and protect the lives, lands, and properties of our citizens.”
