Hundreds of job seekers staged a sit-in demonstration in front of the West Bengal Police headquarters at Bhabani Bhavan in south Kolkata's Alipore area and blocked roads in front of the office on Monday demanding immediate recruitment in the force. Senior police officers including Deputy Commissioner (South) Akash Magharia rushed to the spot and assured the demonstrators to look into their demand and refer the matter to the authorities concerned.

"We know that there are several vacancies in the police. We want immediate employment in the force. Unless we get an assurance, we will continue our demonstration. We appeal to the chief minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, to look into the matter," one of the job seekers, Atanu Pal from Kharagpur, said.
