Replying to the BJP legislator RS Pathania's queries, the government said that the fresh proposal was a consequence of the proliferation of the new and social media. The new media policy is presently at the inter-departmental consultation stage for finalisation, it said."Suitable provisions have now been proposed in the draft of the New Media policy-2026 to provide a regulatory framework for the new and social media along with the print media," the government said. According to the Department of Information and Public Relations (DIPR), the regulation of websites, digital platforms including online news channels and fact check units does not come under its purview. According to the department, 28 rebuttals regarding fake news or misinformation were issued between April 2025 and January this year. It said "20 rebuttals have been issued through press releases and 8 through social media handles of the DIPR".
