Jammu and Kashmir police inspector Masroor Ahmad was critically injured after he was shot and wounded by militants on Sunday evening in Eidgah area of Srinagar, said officials. The incident occurred at Eidgah sports ground in downtown Srinagar. He has been shifted to a hospital where is undergoing treatment, according to officials.

"Terrorists fired upon and injured inspector Masroor Ahmad near Eidgah, Srinagar. He was immediately shifted to hospital for treatment. Preliminary investigation reveals that a pistol was used in this #terror crime. Area cordoned off, case registered," the J&K Police said.

Police and Central Reserve Police Force officials immediately cordoned the area and launched a search operation to nab the accused. According to eyewitnesses, the assailants came into the cricket ground where hundreds of locals play cricket every Sunday and the inspector was present there as well.

The officer was playing cricket at the Eidgah playground when terrorists fired three shots in eye, abdomen and neck from close range, the officials said.

They managed to flee from the spot after firing the shots, which triggered a chaos and confusion in the playground, with scores of players running towards the exits.

Additional director general of police (Kashmir range) Vijay Kumar rushed to the scene to take stock of the situation. "We have identified the terrorist. His name is Basit Dar and he hails from Kulgam. He has been active for quite some time and working at the behest of his masters across the border," Kumar told PTI, adding that a Turkish revolver was used in the attack.
