JDS MLC Suraj Revanna to face CID probe following arrest in sexual assault case

The Karnataka government on Sunday handed over JDS MLC Suraj Revanna’s case to the CID, a day after he was arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a party worker. Suraj, the older brother of rape accused former MP Prajwal Revanna, was booked under section 377 (unnatural sex), 342 (wrongful confinement), 506 (criminal intimidation), 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

The MLC’s personal assistant in turn, has filed an FIR against the party worker, accusing him of threatening and blackmailing Suraj with false complaints of sexual assault.

The arrest, which is yet another blow to the family, comes days after Prajwal Revanna was remanded to special investigation team (SIT) custody till June 24 by a Karnataka court on Wednesday, a day after he was sent to judicial custody under separate charges. His father HD Revanna is a JDS MLA and former minister.


The grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda lost the recent Lok Sabha election as the NDA candidate from Hassan. He was arrested on May 31, when he returned to the country after being on the run for nearly five weeks. He is battling charges of sexual abuse of women after pen drives of explicit videos allegedly involving him surfaced in Hassan and other places days ahead of the April 26 election.

Revanna Jr’s mother, Bhavani Revanna, got anticipatory bail on Tuesday. She had appeared before the SIT on June 7 after being on the run for a week, having obtained interim anticipatory bail. The SIT has claimed that she was the mastermind in the conspiracy to abduct one of the survivors of her son’s alleged sexual assault.

Her husband, MLA HD Revanna, who is also an accused in the case, is currently out on bail. The SIT is probing him on charges of sexual harassment of a domestic help. He has sought quashing of the charges against him and the matter is pending in court.
