Jaishankar speaks to Iran foreign minister amid Trump threatening 'hell' on Iran's infrastructure

External Affairs Minister Jaishankar on Sunday said he received a call from his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, during which the two leaders discussed the prevailing situation in the region.

EAM Jaishankar, in a post on X, said: “Received a call from Foreign Minister @araghchi of Iran. Discussed the present situation.” He, however, did not share further details of the conversation.

The interaction comes amid rising tensions in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil transit route. The region has witnessed increased military activity and sharp rhetoric from multiple sides, raising concerns of a broader conflict.

India is closely monitoring the developments, given its significant strategic and economic stakes in the region. A large share of the country’s crude oil imports passes through the Strait of Hormuz, making stability there vital for its energy security.

Trump's threat looms
Trump said in a social media post on Sunday that the United States will target Iran's power plants ‌and bridges ⁠on ⁠Tuesday if the Strait of Hormuz is not reopened.

"Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like ⁠it!!!" Trump ‌said in a Truth Social post, referencing the key shipping ⁠lane that Tehran has effectively closed since the U.S. and Israel launched attacks on Iran more than a month ago.

"Open the Fuckin’ Strait, you crazy bastards, or you’ll be living in Hell - ‌JUST WATCH!," Trump said, ending his Easter morning post with: "Praise be to Allah."

The ⁠president separately said he would hold a news conference on Monday in the Oval Office, after the U.S. military rescued two U.S. pilots whose aircraft were downed in Iran.
