The long-term agreement for India to manage the Chabahar port would not have happened without the "interest" and "initiative" of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Amir Abdollahian who unfortunately died in a helicopter crash, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said here on Monday paying tributes to the Iranian architects of the deal that was signed on May 13.

India will observe a one-day mourning on Tuesday, for Raisi who died in a tragic helicopter crash. According to a government statement, the national flag will be flown at half-mast throughout India on all buildings where the national flag is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment on the day.


After the confirmation of Raisi's death, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences. Taking to X, Modi said he was "deeply saddened and shocked by the tragic demise" of Raisi, adding that "India stands with Iran in this time of sorrow."

It may be recalled that Raisi gave special focus to ties with India under his Act East Policy.
