Jaishankar flags India’s concerns over US sanctions law in talks with Rubio

New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday said he had reiterated India's concerns over the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act (SRIA) in talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Jaishankar, following his meeting with Rubio, wrote on X that he "reiterated India's interests and concerns with regard to SRIA. Also discussed the Gulf and Ukraine situations."

ET had reported on Monday that the threat of 100% tariffs being imposed by the US for Russian oil purchases hasn't gone down too well in India, given that global energy supplies are getting further squeezed with the Red Sea blockade by the Houthis cutting off Saudi Arabian crude, on top of the Strait of Hormuz blockade due to the Iran conflict, making a bad situation worse. The issue has the potential to damage India-US ties.

US President Donald Trump signed into law the Lindsey O Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act on Friday. India has been in talks with the US over the past few months, conveying the possible adverse impact on ties if up to 100% tariffs are imposed under the legislation.

Russia continues to be India's number one oil supplier. India imported 2.08 million barrels per day (bpd) of Russian oil in August. Moscow's share in New Delhi's crude imports was 45% in August. India will be an official partner at the Russia Energy Week exposition in Moscow next month.

One Indian killed in attack on commercial vessel off Oman coast

An Indian national lost his life while 19 other Indian seafarers were rescued after their commercial vessel, MV Cape Dao, came under attack off the east coast of Oman.

India condemned the attack on the vessel.
