In a shocking incident near Karnataka’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hampi, two women, including a 27-year-old Israeli tourist, were allegedly gang-raped late Thursday night. The crime occurred while the victims were stargazing near Sanapur Lake, police confirmed on Saturday.

According to authorities, the Israeli tourist was accompanied by three male tourists—one from the United States and two from Odisha and Maharashtra—as well as a 29-year-old homestay operator. The group had gathered by the canal after dinner, enjoying music and the night sky, when the attack took place.

Police reported that three men on a motorcycle approached the group around 11 pm, inquiring about the nearest petrol pump. When the homestay operator informed them that no petrol stations were nearby, the accused demanded Rs 100. Upon refusal, the men, who were reportedly speaking Kannada and Telugu, began verbally abusing the group.

The situation escalated when the assailants allegedly gang-raped the homestay operator and the Israeli tourist. They also pushed the three male tourists into the canal. Two of the men sustained injuries, while the third, from Odisha, remains missing, police said.

A case has been registered at the Gangavathi Rural Police Station under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges of extortion, robbery, gangrape, and attempted murder. The two women are currently receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

In an official statement, police confirmed, “We have registered the case and identified the suspects. Six teams have been formed, and efforts are underway to nab them.”
