Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian set to visit India for BRICS summit amid Hormuz tensions

New Delhi: Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian will travel to Delhi to attend the 18th BRICS summit on September 12-13, said people familiar with the matter.

This will be his maiden trip to India as the President of Iran, and it will take place in the backdrop of the US-Iran war and blockade of the Strait of Hormuz which has impacted maritime traffic and disrupted critical energy supplies to India.

The two sides have been engaged in intense diplomacy since March to secure safe passage for commercial vessels carrying energy supplies meant for India through the Strait of Hormuz. During the September visit, India would like to firm up its arrangement with Iran on the Chabahar Port, said a person with knowledge of the matter.


Pezeshkian is also expected to brief India on peace talks with the US.

India will await lifting of sanctions to resume oil imports and launch trade activities with Iran. In April, India received its first shipments of Iranian oil in seven years.

Pezeshkian last met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024 and the two have spoken over the phone several times since the beginning of the war.

The visit follows an earlier formal invitation extended by Prime Minister Modi during a phone conversation with the Iranian President in late June.

In that call, according to Iranian readouts, the two leaders discussed regional developments in West Asia and cooperation within multilateral frameworks including BRICS. The PM stressed dialogue, diplomacy and the importance of freedom of navigation, particularly through key routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

India has sought to balance its longstanding ties with Iran with other regional partners in West Asia. Iran became a full BRICS member in 2024 and has participated in previous summits and ministerial meetings, including the foreign ministers' gathering held in Delhi in May this year.
