Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister visits India days after Foreign Minister trip

Safari has proposed use of single currency for Shanghai cooperation organizations or SCO member states. Tehran sent a letter to the grouping suggesting this proposal. However, India’s position on this proposal is not yet known.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari is on a two-day India visit starting Monday in what is second Ministerial visit from Tehran to India in less than a week. A key item on the agenda for the trip is providing further impetus to the Chabahar port project and connectivity.

Volatility in the Indian energy markets could also be on the agenda of the visit, it has been learnt. The visit comes as the focus is on increasing economic engagement between the two countries.

India is developing the first phase of Shahid Beheshti Terminal at the Chabahar Port and INSTC operationalisation has been put on fast track.

This is the second high-level visit from Iran since last week. Last week witnessed a four-day visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian to India in which he held talks with PM Narendra Modi, Foreign Minister Jaishankar and NSA A K Doval here.
